County to plant over 100,000 trees to promote environmental conservation

The Kisii County Government will plant over 100,000 trees to promote environmental conservation and mitigate effects of climate change.

Speaking during a tree planting exercise in Kisii, CEC in charge of Environment, Energy, Water and Natural Resources Moiro Omari said youth groups will provide seedlings and labour for the exercise.

Moiro who was flanked by his Chief Officer Zablon Ongori and Director, Environment Samson Bokea said the trees will be planted in public institutions including hospitals, schools and administrative offices.

“This project seeks to increase the tree cover in Kisii and promote environmental conservation. Through it, we shall empower youth groups who will be contracted to provide seedlings and labour. We are also encouraging our people to plant at least ten trees during this rainy season to support our efforts,” said Moiro.

He said his department was mandated to develop a people’s park in Kisii Town and other urban centres.

The department will also plant 5,000 trees at the Effluent Treatment Works in Bogiakumu ward, Bonchari Sub County.

The Director Environment, Mr Bokea urged residents to ensure they treat water for domestic use to avoid water borne diseases especially during this rainy season. He also called on the youth to establish tree nurseries and sell to the County Government.

Water Resource Management Authority’s Regional Manager Joseph Wendot said the tree planting exercise will help protect riparian land hence improve water quality. “Our people should plant the right tree species and away from water catchments. Our officers are on hand to provide necessary advice on the trees to plant,” said Wendot.
