Kisii County Governor Paul Simba Arati received a team of medical specialists in cardiovascular and oncology surgery at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH).
The team led by Dr. Ambros Kibos of Kibos International Health Foundation (KIHF), Prof. Antony Pais, (an oncologist breast surgeon), Prof. Hiroshi Niinami (cardiovascular surgeon from the Heart Institute of Japan Tokyo Women’s Medical University) Masakazu Nakao (senior consultant cardiothoracic surgeon) Rohit mody (cardiologist) Teresa Kieser (cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon) among others have a rich experience in the treatment and management of cardiovascular and cancer diseases.
“I am happy to inform the people of Kisii county that our discussions with the medical partners have resulted to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Kisii County Government through KTRH, the Kisii University and Kibos which will culminate into the establishment of a cardiovascular center at the hospital for training, teaching, treatment and research,” said Simba.
The KTRH now has a portable, high resolution Echocardiogram machine that will relieve patients suffering from heart conditions. The machine was donated by the partners drawn from India, Canada, Singapore and Japan.
Through the partnership, the hospital is set to receive a catheterization laboratory (cath lab) to offer specialized treatment to patients with congenital heart diseases, heart failure, aortic valve disease and other related ailments.
KTRH will be the third hospital after the Cost General Hospital and the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to have such a specialized machine and it will serve not only patients from the whole of Western region but also those from the neighboring countries.
Simba also unveiled two anesthetic machines to equip two more theater rooms, baby warmers for pediatric surgeries, chemo biosafety Cabinet for cancer services, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines for the neonatal unit, and a cardiovascular set for heart surgeries that were procured by his administration.
“Due to increased demand for specialist services in the county, we seek to increase the number of consultants in our fold, including nursing specialists. Taking particular note of the rising demand in pathological support and cancer patient’s care, we need more specialists in this area, in readiness for the upcoming Kisii Cancer diagnostic and treatment centre,” he said.
